Lindsay Park have continued their successful run in the time-honoured Darley Maribyrnong Plate to win back-to-back editions of the juvenile sprint with their improving colt Finance Tycoon.
The Written Tycoon colt followed in the footsteps of his stablemate, Hard Landing, who won the Group Three event on debut last year.
Having finished runners-up in the Darley Spring Preview (900m) at Flemington at his first start, Finance Tycoon managed to go one better with the addition of blinkers.
“He got a bit lost the first time down the straight. He did everything right and was closing a bit late. We jumped him out at the farm with the blinkers on and he went well, and we thought why not try it. Obviously it worked,” co-trainer Ben Hayes said post-race.
Hayes, who is in his first season as a joint training partnership with Tom Dabernig, was thrilled to win the two-year-old sprint that has meant so much to their family.
“It is a race that dad (David) used to love and it’s nice that Tom and I have been able to win it as well in our first year out of the partnership with dad. It’s fantastic,” Hayes said post-race.
“The team at home do a fantastic job and this is all to them. Tom and I are just the faces, so I’m sure the team has got a big thrill.”
Finance Tycoon jumped as an $8 chance with TAB and narrowly held off the $1.85 favourite Ingratiating.
