Despite doing her best to throw away the race in the run, Grahame Begg’s promising two-year-old Dosh proved too speedy for her opposition to win the Group Three Darley Ottawa Stakes (1000m) down the Flemington straight.
The Rich Enuff filly led all the way to provide the Grahame Begg-Jordan Childs combination with their first winner for the 2020 Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Begg was delighted to see his promising juvenile win despite being green.
“She did the same thing when we took her to Moonee Valley - wanted to lay out a bit at the winning post. But she pulled enough out today to get her head across the line first and did a great job,” Begg said post-race.
“She’s shown us very natural ability from the first day we started to do some work with her and let her start to stretch her legs a bit. I’m sure that she’s going to be a very valuable filly in the future.”
Jockey Jordan Childs added: “She’s still immature and spots things and is a typical young horse and doesn’t quite know how to go straight and wanted to dart out and nearly chucked it away, but I guess she’s got that much ability she was able to hold on today.”
Dosh duly saluted for her supporters having started as the $5.50 race-favourite with TAB.
