The jockey of the moment, Jamie Kah, continued her successful Spring campaign by lifting the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Victoria Quay ($6.50 with TAB) over the line to win the G2 G.H. Mumm Wakeful Stakes.
At just her fourth career start, the South Australian filly has continued to show marked improvement as she steps up in trip. Despite the Wakeful being a key lead up to the Kennedy Oaks in recent years, with Miami Bound (2019) and Aristia (2018) claiming the double, the McEvoy camp are likely to bypass it this year with the Dundeel filly.
“We didn’t pay up for the Oaks. That was a calculated decision. She’s always been a bit buzzy, immature upstairs but she’s really come a long way. To do that at her fourth start, was just a huge effort, and what a ride by Jamie.”
Jockey Jamie Kah said it was “special” to land the win for one of her biggest supporters.
“Tony and Calvin, they’ve helped me throughout my whole career and he’s almost like an old boss to me, Tony. It is just terrific to repay him in carnival week and on such a lovely filly.”
