Sydney-visitor Yulong Prince brought his consistent Group 1 form to Flemington and powered away to land the G1 Kennedy Cantala for the all-conquering Chris Waller stable.
Well-ridden by jockey Damian Lane, the victory extended Waller’s hold on the feature mile race having won four editions over the last 10 years.
The G1 victory adds to the former South African galloper’s successful run at Flemington having tasted black-type success when winning the Listed Furphy Plate (1800m) last year.
Stable representative Jo Taylor was thrilled to gain more success for a strong supporter of theirs.
“It’s a Group 1 for Yulong and Mr Zhang and it’s just fantastic to get that on the board. He’s a big supporter of ours, not just us, but racing in Australia. They’re deserving of these big results.”
Jockey Damian Lane was happy to grab a win over inform jockey Damien Oliver.
“[Yulong Prince] didn’t step that great so from there I did need some tempo and with the nice tracking he really let rip off that tempo. I got to the front quite early, too, and I could hear Oli’s yelling.
“His very distinctive voice coming from behind. Normally once you hear it he gets you but it was good that he (Yulong Prince) knuckled down and fought it out for the win. I got a rare one up on him there.”
Yulong Prince started at $11 with TAB while Mr Quickie was the unplaced favourite at $6.50.
