The James Cummings-trained Exhilarates closed out 2020 Lexus Melbourne Cup day with a gutsy victory up Flemington’s ‘straight six’.
Having already been a dual-black type winner, Exhilarates’ class was to the fore in the Listed MSS Security Sprint to secure a narrow head victory over the Leon and Troy Corstens-trained The Astrologist.
Top jockey Kerrin McEvoy, who finished runner-up in the Lexus Melbourne Cup aboard Tiger Moth, was thrilled to see the mare dig deep at her first run down the straight.
“It was important to get the first half of the race right. She enjoyed a nice run today. James and the team had her in good nick and it was a gritty win because she had to burrow through and when I asked her for the full effort at the furlong, she gave it. It’s nice to get another winner for James,” McEvoy said.
Godolphin’s stable representative Sean Keogh was delighted to see their very first Magic Millions buy return to her best.
“[She] turned out to be a very lucrative buy. She’s done really well since and James and the team have programmed her really nicely.
Scratching her on Saturday proved to be worthy. We like to run our horses where they have the best winning chance so it proved the right decision today.”
Exhilarates started at $7.50 with TAB, as the race-favourite The Astrologist ($5 with TAB) completed the quinella.
