Jockey Ben Allen has continued his remarkable affiliation with the Phillip Stokes-trained Sansom to win the Network 10 Chatham Stakes.
In his seventh ride on the four-year-old gelding, Allen won his sixth race aboard the talented sprinter who stepped up to the 1400m for the second time in his career.
Failing to fire over the track and trip as a three-year-old, Sansom clearly made amends to fend off the late charges from the Peter Jolly-trained Morvada and the Gordon Richards-trained Bold Star.
Trainer Phillip Stokes was delighted to see Allen’s hard work with the horse continue to pay off.
“He (Ben) did a lot of the early work on this horse. For Ben to get a win like this it would mean a lot to him,” Stokes said post-race. “He rated him lovely in front and kept on building. Full credit to him, he rode it really well. He’s (Sansom) relaxing a little better, he’s got stronger so we’ve always had a good opinion of him. I think 1400 (metres) is as far as he wants but he’s got plenty more wins in him.
Continuing to train Sansom out of Melbourne, Stokes said a hit and run mission to the Gold Coast could be the geldings next target.
“He’s a Magic Millions horse…. 1400 metres around the Gold Coast? Maybe. He’s an on-pace sort of horse so I might contemplate that.”
