After breaking track records at every start this preparation, Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes’ exciting filly Written Beauty showed off her talent down the Flemington straight to win the Network 10 Red Roses Stakes.
In another thrilling finish, the Written Tycoon three-year-old closed off Kennedy Oaks day with a hard fought half-of-a-neck victory over another Sydney-visitor Marboosha.
Now with a Group Three win to her name, co-trainer Wayne Hawkes believes there’s still plenty more improvement to come with Written Beauty.
“The second horse (Marboosha) was in the same sort of rut, we were both facing the breeze, but she’s got a lot of upside and she’s at the end of her tether. This will be the least of where she’s going to go,” Hawkes said post-race.
“She’s got a massive upside and she’s going to be some filly when she matures. Truthfully, it is more about mentally than physically because she’s a brute of a horse now. We just need to get her mentally more on song and she’ll be away.”
At his final day of riding in Victoria, Western Australian jockey William Pike ended his successful stint on a high with the winning ride.
“It all unfolded pretty well,” he said. “If I had my time again and had a bit more guts, I should have dropped in behind Jamie Kah (on Amuri) and actually got proper cover. I just didn’t back myself in enough there, but it didn’t matter she was too good. Keep an eye on her next time around. She’ll be even better I think.”
Written Beauty jumped as the $1.80 race-favourite with TAB while Marboosha, who finished a narrow runner-up, was a $19 shot with TAB.
