Lexus Melbourne Cup
3:00pm
On the 160th running of the Lexus Melbourne Cup, a new chapter was written in our history book and millions of people across the world tuned in to witness dreams come true in
the ‘race that stops a nation’ ™.
Ireland’s Twilight Payment became just the second horse after Might and Power to lead our great race from start to finish for an historic victory in the $8 million Group 1 Lexus Melbourne Cup. The win was the second triumph for Joseph O’Brien, who won his first Cup with Rekindling in 2017, while 25-year-old jockey Jye McNeil secured his first win from his first ride in the Cup.
Kangaroo Island had two reasons to smile when Twilight Payment passed the post first, winning $50,000 in the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour National Sweep, which was then matched by the owners of Twilight Payment. The bushfire-hit community has chosen the Royal Flying Doctor Service as the worthy recipients of the $100,000 prize.
Cup Day also featured the return of three-time Cup winner Makybe Diva to Flemington Racecourse, with this year marking 15 years since her historic third win in Australia’s greatest race.
The mare was earlier crowned the ultimate Cup winner, taking out the Lexus Melbourne Cup The Race of Dreams on Network 10. The thrilling virtual race pitted 24 past champions of the Melbourne Cup against each other, with legendary Phar Lap coming second and Carbine third.
Alt-rock band The Rubens kicked off the Cup Day entertainment, performing their new single ‘Time of My Life’ against the backdrop of the iconic Sydney Harbour.
The pre-Cup entertainment was led by Pete Murray who performed his moving single ‘Found My Place’ from Tallow Beach in Byron Bay, a tribute to Australia and the magic of the Cup.
Rock icon Jon Stevens and his band, including an eight-piece string section, performed an electrifying version of INXS’ hit song ‘Never Tear Us Apart’, pre-recorded at The Club Stand at Flemington Racecourse. The Masked Singer winner and Neighbours star Bonnie Anderson sung the Australian National Anthem live as viewers from across the world tuned in to watch the build up to the Lexus Melbourne Cup.
Multiple ARIA award winner and multiplatinum singer/songwriter Delta Goodrem performed her latest track ‘Solid Gold’ from the roof top of Network Ten in Sydney, much to the delight of fans across Australia.
